Vanlife Fitout & Conversion for Nathan Hawes
G’day I’m Kyle @kylbishop instagram click here, 21 from Newcastle NSW Australia
I’ve been living and traveling the east coast of Australia in my van now for 7 months.
I fund my low cost life style by working as a carpenter in my hometown.
I have also made myself readily available to the Vanlife crew to become one of their Australian Van conversion specialists. For me converting vans into homes or campers is one of the most rewarding things I can do as I feel like I can use my skills to help people become part of this amazing life style we call Vanlife!
I was blessed with an amazing opportunity to be able to do a van fit out for Nathan Hawes from central coast NSW. Nathan had limited time before he was leaving for his latest tour “ill remember” available on itunes Click Here. So within two days of meeting with Nathan and going over some quick plans we got to work on his Renault master.
Nathan's van fit out wasn’t the biggest one I have done but I knew it would take just as much time and effort to make sure it was going to be what he wanted.
At first I wasn’t quite sure what style and look he was after, but once I showed him the option of using cypress pine he fell in love with the natural organic golden timber and so I got to work.
Nathan's fit out would consist of a bed frame with enough room underneath for storage of all he’s music gear whilst he is on tour, and don’t forget the room for the surf boards!. He requested a bed side table to give him somewhere to place some smaller day to day items, also giving him some bench space to put a few beverages when doing the odd van chill session with friends.
The cypress boards came as 89mm boards so all the timber had to be glued and laminated together to make the bed frame and bedside table panels. For all structural members of the fit outs that wouldn’t be seen once the doors where closed and the mattress had been placed in I decided to use 17mm form ply for its pre finished gloss black coating and strength.
This fit out wasn’t one that I wanted to rush and all in all the fit out took me 4 days to complete. It wasn’t the most complex one to construct but I was making extra effort to make sure fine details such as door margins and alignment were spot on, I made sure that every cut edge had a 3mm splay to allow for a real sharp looking finish. It was also important to make sure all the joints in the cypress pine panels lined up and the doors were cut straight from the panels, trimmed and hinged back into the same panels to create a certain effect once the doors where closed, “almost as if they are not even there”.
The end result was great, the fit out operated just as Nathan had dreamed it would, and I even snuck in a cheeky little set of fold out legs to one of the top hinged doors to give Nathan more working space for them “ van chills”.
